"Force et honneur." (“Strength and honor.”)
Today we celebrate the greatest victory in history.
Not a victory of power, but a victory of love.
Not a victory of kings, but a victory of sacrifice.
On Good Friday, it seemed like darkness had won.
But on Easter Sunday, the tomb was empty.
As it is written in The Bible:
"He is not here; He has risen!" (Luke 24:6)
This is our hope.
That death is not the end.
That suffering is not meaningless.
That through Christ, there is life, forgiveness, and resurrection.
No matter who you are or where you come from,
Easter reminds us:
There is always a new beginning.
Christ is risen.
And with Him, we rise too.
Amen.

Easter traditions in Europe have evolved over time, blending Christian and pagan roots. Here's a glimpse into how Easter is celebrated differently across Europe:

Unique Easter Traditions
  • Sweden and Finland: Easter Witches: Children dress up as Easter witches, singing and collecting candy door-to-door.
  • Denmark: Mysterious Letters: Children send anonymous letters with riddles, and the recipient who guesses the sender wins a chocolate egg.
  • Greece: Pot Throwing: On Holy Saturday, residents of Corfu throw pots out of windows to symbolize renewal and good crops.
  • Spain: Semana Santa Processions: Elaborate processions take place during Holy Week, featuring floats with Jesus and the Virgin Mary.
  • Italy: Scoppio del Carro: A cart filled with fireworks is ignited in front of the Duomo in Florence, symbolizing good harvests.
  • Czech Republic and Slovakia: Willow Whipping: Men use willow branches to lightly tap women, promoting health and youth.
  • Germany: Easter Fires: Bonfires are lit on Holy Saturday to mark the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
  • France: Giant Omelet: In the town of Haux, a massive omelet is made with over 4,500 eggs for the community.
  • United Kingdom: Egg Rolling: Hard-boiled eggs are rolled down hills to see whose egg goes the furthest.¹

Traditional Easter Foods
  • Italy: Colomba di Pasqua: A sweet bread shaped like a dove, symbolizing peace and renewal.
  • Germany: Easter Bread: A traditional bread often braided or twisted, sometimes with raisins or almonds.
  • Greece: Red-Dyed Eggs: Eggs are dyed red to symbolize new life and good fortune.² ³

Easter Celebrations in Austria
  • Decorated Eggs: Painted eggs are exchanged as gifts, and intricately decorated eggs are displayed in spring arrangements.
  • Traditional Meals: Family gatherings feature traditional meals, often with ham, horseradish, and eggs.

These diverse traditions showcase the rich cultural heritage of Easter celebrations across Europe.
