It was a Mattel (I think) "Tommy gun" that used rolls of caps. It didn't always work, but when it did, it was quite impressive. Rate of fire was about 700 caps per minute. Rat-a-tat-tat-tat.........

I had 2, one a combat color green, then a James Bond one in black.

Perforated caps were used in both.
 
I couldn't afford to shoot 700 caps per minute when I was a kid.
