Let's all get in the wayback machine and relive a moment from Don's 2016 convention acceptance speech. You know, before we knew without question just how much of a bigger than life buffoon he is.

I have joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people that cannot defend themselves. Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it. I have seen firsthand how the system is rigged against our citizens, just like it was rigged against Bernie Sanders – he never had a chance.

But his supporters will join our movement, because we will fix his biggest issue: trade. Millions of Democrats will join our movement because we are going to fix the system so it works for all Americans. In this cause, I am proud to have at my side the next Vice President of the United States: Governor Mike Pence of Indiana.

What he actually meant was "I alone can fix the system so it works for me."

But that's not what the thread is really about. It's about how the guy who pardoned violent criminals involved in the J6 riot managed to take a winning issue for himself and muck it up.

Usually immigration is a wedge issue for Democrats. Now it’s one for Trump.

President Donald Trump’s got a new problem. It seems hard to believe, but some of his own base thinks his administration hasn’t sufficiently cracked down hard enough on illegal immigration.

News emerged last week that the White House wanted to soften the president’s reputation on immigration enforcement by reportedly discouraging the party from talking about “mass deportations” and suggesting a rhetorical focus on removing violent criminals. Immediately, a group of pro-Trump immigration hawks began a lobbying effort to deter Trump from even pursuing his mostly cosmetic attempt to moderate on the issue. Inconveniently for the president, this group calls itself the “Mass Deportation Coalition.”

To put it succinctly, he let the goons off the chain and the majority of Americans didn't like it.

AI Overview
As of March 2026, a majority of Americans oppose Donald Trump’s immigration policies, with 58-65% believing deportation tactics and ICE actions have "gone too far".

Perhaps the new quote attributed to him should read, "Only I can take an issue that helped get me elected and make it unpopular." Not that broadly speaking a more strict border policy is unpopular. But the tactics ICE has used and the focus on mass deportation regardless of circumstance, Stephen Miller's wet dream, surely are. For someone who is credited with having great political instincts, I prefer to think of it as the instincts of a professional conman, he let his deep seated disdain for non-whites take over. The result not only being more cracks in the facade but cracks that run deep in the party.

It's not a fair fight when you use facts in an argument with trumples. Deep down they know this. But their unconditional devotion to Dear Leader requires a suspension of reality. Because admitting trump has conned them is unacceptable.

Yeah.

I may be getting too hopeful here, but there have been several MAGA pundits starting to peel away, and I've seen at least two of the True Believers here on USMB start to wake up. I know the books say that peeling away from a cult is a process, but I'll take pretty much anything I can get right now.

Acceptance of reality: No.

However, some in the party want to move on from the Big Lie.

‘We’re going to have a problem’: Republicans want Trump to move on from 2020

President Donald Trump is bringing back 2020. Many Republicans wish he wouldn’t.

Conversations with nearly a dozen GOP state and county chairs and strategists reveal a party largely eager to move on from relitigating Trump’s election grievances, which they’re worried may detract from an economic message that actually motivates voters. But the president won’t let it go, subpoenaing 2020 election records and putting pressure on lawmakers to pass legislation to overhaul voter registration laws.

Does this include acknowledging the SAVE Act is just an extension of Don's 2020 fantastical obsession?

I voted for Trump 3 times.

Not a fan of the war.

Cult, huh?

What lies from the Biden administration have you conceded?

THE TRUMP VAX WILL STOP THE INFECTION AND SPREAD OF COVID?

Show me.

Did you ever admit Biden was cognitively compromised?

The Hunter Biden Laptop is a Putin fake.

The Ashley Biden diary is fake.

The virus came from a pangolin having sex with a bat.

The Trump vax is SAFE AND EFFECTIVE.

Just a few examples.

The projection is amazing.

Display to this MB when you were at odds with the Biden administration.

Yeah.

I don't think one can under state the significance of media personalities like Rogan actually speaking to his audience in a truthful way when it comes to the subject of trump. The previous breaking point coming over the ongoing violation of the Epstein File Transparency Act. Now Don has forsaken the minions by attacking Iran.

These are bright lines that have been crossed and The Following has noticed. Just imagine what the midterms will look like if more R's come out of their propaganda fueled slumber.
