Let's all get in the wayback machine and relive a moment from Don's 2016 convention acceptance speech. You know, before we knew without question just how much of a bigger than life buffoon he is.
I have joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people that cannot defend themselves. Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it. I have seen firsthand how the system is rigged against our citizens, just like it was rigged against Bernie Sanders – he never had a chance.
But his supporters will join our movement, because we will fix his biggest issue: trade. Millions of Democrats will join our movement because we are going to fix the system so it works for all Americans. In this cause, I am proud to have at my side the next Vice President of the United States: Governor Mike Pence of Indiana.

What he actually meant was "I alone can fix the system so it works for me."
But that's not what the thread is really about. It's about how the guy who pardoned violent criminals involved in the J6 riot managed to take a winning issue for himself and muck it up.
News emerged last week that the White House wanted to soften the president’s reputation on immigration enforcement by reportedly discouraging the party from talking about “mass deportations” and suggesting a rhetorical focus on removing violent criminals. Immediately, a group of pro-Trump immigration hawks began a lobbying effort to deter Trump from even pursuing his mostly cosmetic attempt to moderate on the issue. Inconveniently for the president, this group calls itself the “Mass Deportation Coalition.”

To put it succinctly, he let the goons off the chain and the majority of Americans didn't like it.
AI Overview
As of March 2026, a majority of Americans oppose Donald Trump’s immigration policies, with 58-65% believing deportation tactics and ICE actions have "gone too far".
Perhaps the new quote attributed to him should read, "Only I can take an issue that helped get me elected and make it unpopular." Not that broadly speaking a more strict border policy is unpopular. But the tactics ICE has used and the focus on mass deportation regardless of circumstance, Stephen Miller's wet dream, surely are. For someone who is credited with having great political instincts, I prefer to think of it as the instincts of a professional conman, he let his deep seated disdain for non-whites take over. The result not only being more cracks in the facade but cracks that run deep in the party.

Usually immigration is a wedge issue for Democrats. Now it’s one for Trump.
President Donald Trump’s got a new problem. It seems hard to believe, but some of his own base thinks his administration hasn’t sufficiently cracked down hard enough on illegal immigration.News emerged last week that the White House wanted to soften the president’s reputation on immigration enforcement by reportedly discouraging the party from talking about “mass deportations” and suggesting a rhetorical focus on removing violent criminals. Immediately, a group of pro-Trump immigration hawks began a lobbying effort to deter Trump from even pursuing his mostly cosmetic attempt to moderate on the issue. Opinion | Usually immigration is a wedge issue for Democrats. Now it’s one for Trump.
The president faces a dilemma on an issue he once owned.
To put it succinctly, he let the goons off the chain and the majority of Americans didn't like it.
