I am usually looking for something in particular locally when I hit Armslist, but I don't check it everyday...but I do check my news feeds everyday.
Yesterday I ran across a newspaper site on the other side of the state that I enjoyed reading, but the RSS feed was only "All News" and didn't break down for state and national news only. My local paper locks it's content and the Springfield News-Leader is far too liberal for my taste. So I found a site where I could make any HTML site into an RSS feed. After a little trial and error, I got it figured out.
Later I was searching Armslist and noticed that the entries were a lot like news site entries. I wondered if I could make a search page into a feed...and it turned out that I could and it was pretty easily done.
First you have to go to Armslist and cycle through your search using only the categories and the left hand column filters.
I'm going to do one right now for a 30-06 Remington rifle.
Then, in a separate tab, go to feed43.com and click on "Create a Feed".
You should end up on a page that looks like this (minus the arrows):
Copy the URL from your Armslist search and paste it to the box the red points to (above), then click the "Reload" button.
You should get a screen that looks like this:
Now, for step 2...you should have some empty boxes where the red arrows point...fill them with the code I typed out below the picture (used the wrong window screen capture
) :
"Global Search Pattern" box code: <article class="post"> {%}<!-- HACK FOR EDS -->
"Item (repeatable) Search Pattern" box code: <div class="title">{%}</div>{*}<div class="price">{%}</div>
Then click the Extract Button (blue arrow in image above).
It should extract the posts and give you an "OK" in green with the number of posts extracted and open a new results box:
Step 3:
In the "Item Content Template" box, enter the code: <b>{%1}</b> <b>{%2}</b>
Then click the "Preview" button:
And you should be done!
If all went according to plan, you should see a screen like this:
Post a message if this doesn't work, and we'll tweak it so it does.
