I thought about it this morning when I saw a half dozen turkey buzzards picking at a small rabbit carcass.

Come to find out they can carry up to 4X their weight so it would seem to me that one of them would have toted off the little bunny for itself......Social pecking order maybe? :dunno:

Owls, hawks, Eagles around here!
Same here....Red Tailed and smaller hawks hunt in my back yard all the time....Many a dove has met it's demise back there.

We have both Eagles and Ospreys down on my river property. I love to watch the Ospreys fish. Ospreys are no joke, I'm amazed at the size of the fish they pluck out of the water. The fuckin' Eagles will steal from them.

I shoot carp with a bow this time of year and the coons and Eagles make short work of them.

Condors weigh up to 15 kg, or 40 lbs ... four times that is 160 lbs ... they can carry off an average adult female human? ...

The answer is no ... mainly because their feet aren't strong enough to hold that kind of weight ... if a vulture has to carry something off, they do so in their beaks ... their wings are designed for soaring, not heavy lifting ... this is universally true for Turkey Vultures, however there are exceptions for Black Vultures ... {Cite} ...

ETA: I've had eagles hunt my cats ... peacocks will taste a cat but generally won't eat them ... other than that it's just the mountain lions that keep the strays in check ...

Not sure how much most vultures might be able to carry, but ex-mother-in- law seemed to be able to carry most anything she wanted.

That would be like a family gathered around the dinner table at Thanksgiving and you run off with the turkey and go eat it in your room by yourself.

Not cool.

As far as I know "cool" in not in nature's vocabulary when it comes to obtaining food.

I just figured the Turkey Buzzards were not able to carry much weight.

Here it's the Peregrine falcons and red tailed hawks. They'll eat kittens. There's no escaping a Peregrine in a 240mph dive.

And the owls too. They love kitten meat.
Well.....I just won't be leaving my kittens outside till they get bigger.
We have hawks and Owls in my neighborhood. We're surrounded by pastures on the cattle farm up the road.

My cat and the neighbor's cat a little distance of woods in between were friends and hung out from time to time.

One evening my cat came flying through the kitchen window from a 5 ft high storage shed, looking behind herself with saucer eyes....

The next few days she did not make one meow to ask to go outside. We ran in to our neighbor and he told us that he saw an owl sweep up his cat, while my cat watched....then she ran like the dickens through the woods.... and then in through the opened kitchen window....

She never ventured off again....it changed her completely. Even when she went out on the deck with us, she wouldn't stay out there unless she was under a chair or under the table!
