Leaked documents reveal that Microsoft strengthened its existing partnerships with the Israeli military after October 7, 2023, by providing advanced cloud storage and computing services to the Israeli army.
The Israeli Ministry of Defense also classifies Microsoft as a "trusted partner," entrusting it with highly classified and sensitive projects.
Microsoft employees worked closely with the Israeli military, offering technical advice remotely and even being physically present at military bases.
The documents further show that the Israeli Ministry of Defense approved the purchase of 19,000 hours of engineering and consulting support services from Microsoft between October 2023 and June 2024, in a partnership deal worth over $10 million.
This coincided with a 60% increase in the Israeli military's consumption of the Azure cloud platform during the first six months of the war on Gaza, compared to the four months preceding the war.
In the early days of the war, Microsoft engineers played a pivotal role in providing technical support to Israeli intelligence units, including Unit 8200 and Unit 9900, which specialize in collecting and analyzing visual intelligence. The goal was to facilitate their use of cloud infrastructure and enhance operational performance.
During the bombardment of Gaza, the Israeli Air Force's "Ofek" unit used Microsoft’s communication and email systems to manage massive databases of potential airstrike targets, known as "target banks."
The documents also reveal a massive surge in the Israeli military’s use of Microsoft’s AI-powered products during the same period. By the end of March 2024, the consumption of machine learning tools on the Azure platform had increased 64-fold compared to September 2023.
Additionally, the use of OpenAI products, such as the GPT-4 AI model, significantly increased, with the Israeli military accessing them through Azure rather than directly from OpenAI.
