I don't think this is any abuse of any poster. So feel free to watch it and
Comment about it.

I personally think they waited too long to advise ATC that some of their instruments had failed. I also think that their was a lot of pertinent information that it would have been helpful to relay to ATC on first contact.

Robert Kennedy did not have instruments that failed him.

Isn't this a very old incident? Like from the 1960s? Several mistakes were made:
  1. Airlines approach under such bad weather should be diverted to another airfield. Better safe than sorry. Such bad weather on landing contributes to more crashes than probably anything else.
  2. They have an instrument system now I think it is called ALS which makes landing in cloudy weather almost fail safe.
  3. Passenger jets are made to an economy. They could be made much safer with redundancies to instruments, special features for landing on water, etc., which could greatly reduce fatalities, but it would add to the cost of jets, the cost of tickets, and the planes holding fewer people.
  4. If you like this sort of thing, you really should check out a TV show called MAYDAY: AIR DISASTER. Quest has it on late at night but you can also watch it online:

Riveting stories very well done full of suspense as you literally dissect the symptoms, events, causes and solutions.

You're right, there was a similar incident but with a tragic ending involving Air India that occured around the mid 1960s however this incident occurred in 2018:
Multiple Failures, Low Fuel, Zero Visibility: The Inside Story Of Air India Flight 101

According to the video, they were on the final leg of a 15-hour flight. At one point, it kind of sounded as if they were flying a holding pattern while they tried to resolve the issues they were experiencing and I thought that they are required to carry enough fuel to enable them to divert to an alternative airport in the event of some unforeseen circumstances, but this is not an American airline so maybe their requirements are not quite as stringent as ours?

They were experiencing several failures of their instruments including the sensors that allow the aircraft to lock onto the ILS signal.

They safely landed the plane and everyone on it arrived at their destination so a success all the way around :-)

I have seen several episodes and enjoy them for the investigative angle they supply I would never want to be in any of their shoes, and if that seems obvious, I know some guys who seem to enjoy overcoming challenges such as these. I simply don't :-)

Yes, they are better than a Sherlock Holmes mystery.

On the contrary, I envy the work and wish I could be in their position of solving crashes.

I have seen Mayday many times.

It’s comforting to know that we fly around in machines that are produced, maintained, and operated as cheaply as possible.

Essentially they are. I mean, I've studied most of the major airplane crashes and have identified several reasons that could have been changed that might have saved the flights, such as:
  • Fail safe redundancy in instrumentation and better design for the hydraulics, etc.
  • Better instrument back up in case of engine failure instead of the stupid wind-driven prop that just generates a little juice for a few basic instruments.
  • Special planes for flight over large bodies of water with ejectable engines and skid plates and ballast that would actually let planes land on water safely.
  • Better ventilation for circulating fresh air and keeping smoke out of cabins when there is a major fire.
Aircraft designers try to hit a happy medium of making planes as safe as possible up to the point of diminished returns where any further engineering would begin to cost so much more in manufacturing and loss of passenger space vs. liklihood of the event.
