I was not the driver and not yet the Company Clerk of HQ and HQ Company, a unit in the 3rd Division at Schweinfurt Germany. Schweinfurt is one of the German cities destroyed by AF bombers. It was the capitol of ball bearing production for the Nazis. We had many of these APCs called M113 determination. We were an armored Infantry. I did drive one of these and the driver was not pleased when I drove over a small tree that was German property. At that time I drove a Jeep for the Company Commander and to me that was also good duty.

I trained there in 1963. I was ordered to fire a weapon I had never fired. Still I was great with rifles. I got some direct hits on the moving target and it impressed officers watching me and others fire the rocket launchers.

So you "barley" missed Elvis :)
Got my Expert Weapons Qualification Badge in Ft. Sill Oklahoma - also shooting with the M-16, that was fun.

His unit was not my unit though the same Division. Audie Murphy was in our Division. I fired the M-14 full automatic at times. I was issued that M-14 in Germany too yet was not interested in firing it. My job was great for getting me out of duties others had to be involved in. Such as the annual PT test. I never took that either. Elvis served 2 years but got to be the rank of Sgt. E-5 and that was super quick. I was to be a Sgt. E5 but the 1st Sgt ended that when I said I would not reenlist.

Yes but still at Schweinfurt Germany. Most of the time I was at the Ledward Barracks serving in the HQ and HQ company, 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry, 3rd Division. After I took a month leave to go to Berlin, when I came back the Col asked me to go to the Air Base and as he said, fix their mess. That was at Conn Barracks and I finished my time there.
