So here's my question: Will hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") work in Western Europe?

I'm no geologist, but it occurs to me that Germany, for example, is pretty similar to Pennsylvania and Upstate New York, and if WE can extract massive amounts of natural gas from the earth, then it seems like Germany (Austria, Poland, etc.) could do the same. So are they NOT doing it because of the strong political power of the "Greens" in those countries, or is the reason geological?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Alternatively, the U.S. has, according to our best estimates, enough recoverable natural gas to last for the next 500 years, so we could - with necessary infrastructural improvements - supply Germany (etc.) with all the gas they need.
