Matrix games, Paradox Interactive, Gamersgate are 3 good places to look for war games. Matrix has their own line of games and partners with several gaming Companies, Paradox is its own game making company and Gamersgate carries all games.

I mostly play turn based games but you have choice of turn real time, pausable real time.

Lot of good solo games out there or multiplayer via LAN or E-mail.
