Real ID is nothing like your Social Security number, because Social Security is strictly limited by law on what sorts of information it can gather on you. Not so Real ID, where the sky is the limit.

The Real ID Act in Section 205 of the Real ID Act, states that the Act:

“Gives the [DHS] Secretary all authority to issue regulations, set standards, and issue grants under this title.”

That means the DHS can demand anything for your Real ID to be valid, including your financial records, medical records, facial scan data, Internet browsing history, and a "social credit score." like everyone has in China.

The Real ID Act, as it is written, allows for completely arbitrary behavior by the government. It does not limit what the government can require for your Real ID to be valid, or what it can do to you if it is not.

Problem is, all these things like driving (on public roads), flying etc are not rights. They can stop you driving and stop you flying WITHOUT Real ID.

I was at the Dollar General Monday afternoon and a late forties woman bought a pack of cigarettes. Not only did she have to show ID, though very obvously over twenty-one, but the casheir scanned the barcode on the back of her license. I can see that being used to track health habits. I guess it was real ID, mine that has a bar code (or QR code? It looks like a hybrid).

I doubt Trump wants to use it to track Americans' health habits and social correctness. I'm guessing he believes it will make commerce easier.
