oct 11 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s criticism of the way CBS edited its interview with his Democratic rival Kamala Harris is a threat to free speech and democracy, the head of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has stated.

Trump had accused CBS of perpetrating “the Greatest Fraud in Broadcast History” by rearranging the ‘60 Minutes’ interview with Harris, aired earlier this week, to make her look more coherent. He called for the network to lose its license.

”While repeated attacks against broadcast stations by the former President may now be familiar, these threats against free speech are serious and should not be ignored,” FCC chair Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democrat, said in a statement on Thursday. “The FCC does not and will not revoke licenses for broadcast stations simply because a political candidate disagrees with or dislikes content or coverage.”

Free speech is based on a freedom from censorship of the TRUTH not the freedom to lie. CBS lied in order to try to make Harris look good to help influence her election. If that is free speech, then why can't I lie to the police? Or to the IRS? Or a judge? The 60 Minutes piece was presented as a matter-of-fact "We asked her questions and these are the answers she gave." Had Trump appeared on there, they would have cut up his comments to make him sound evil, dangerous and an idiot. That is not free speech, that is election influencing for political gain.
