On the surface an electrified fence sounds like a great idea. It would be the best steps toward controlling our southern border.

But the border is nearly 2,000 miles long. Having high voltage running along that close to the ground would be a nightmare. It would kill people trying to get in, for sure. But also every living creature that happens to walk by.

Plus, to maintain an electric fence that is 10 million feet long would be a nightmare. And the "coyotes" would still get people in. It is not hard to defeat an electric fence.

Since the 1970's I have advocated annexation of all the land south to the south side of the Panama canal. We get all those new taxpayers, natural resources ect, the people get a higher standard of living and the cartels and border issues go away.

I don't have a problem with that. But it won't solve the problem of the cartels. In fact, the cartels are the only thing down there we couldn't just annex.

Everyone knows that the best kind of border is a flexible one with humans controlling it. Even Israel's border "wall" is 90% not wall.

2000 volts is not a current, it is an electromotive pressure. The current doesn't happen until an uninsulated illegal puts his hands on the fence.

In theory it could be done, but it would be expensive. And you'd really only need 120 - 220VAC. To to it, you would need:

• A way of isolating the metal fence from the ground.
• A power generating station to generate the voltage separate from the grid.
• A second fence to keep people in Mexico from just walking up and touching it without first breaching the other fence.

PROBLEM IS:

1. Anything that generates electricity can be shorted out. Just ground the fence to earth ground and the fence voltage (difference of potential) drops to zero.
2. There is almost always ways to isolate yourself from either the fence or the ground to avoid completing the path for current to flow.
3. The substation would need breakers to prevent overcurrent in case of attack on the fence and a way of determining where along the fence the fault was to clear the problem.

So in practice, it would be prohibitively expensive plus you'd be tied up forever in human rights lawsuits. I still like the idea of TWO fences, with roving attack dogs patrolling the area between them plus motion detecting high powered lasers.
