I was talking with another teacher yesterday, and we got to discussing the shifting demographics of different cities in Massachusetts. One city has become notably dominated by people from the Dominican Republic and we talked about the various ways that has changed the identity of the city over time. We both know the city well and know Dominican culture also. At one point, the other teacher started bemoaning the fact that some people come to the US to get away from problems in their home country only to bring those problems with them here. Not something I would normally bring up in conversation, but he had a point. And this other teacher is originally from ............ the Dominican Republic.
