I always perceived japan as western more western then serbia and russia even. I didnt know what "west" exactly means, I thought it means "video games, porn, high quality cars, high income, rich, good technology, liberal and gay rights etc." Thats what japan fits better then russia. But recently I learned that west means white and roman civilisation etc. I didnt know that I thought all americans also black african americans etc. are western. to me hip hop was western. anime etc. is pretty western though. to me. now i know it means roman legacy and white ancestry etc. but i thought it means something else like democracy, technology, porn, gay rights etc.japan celebrates christmas etc. a consumerist version of christmas though not the jesus birth, but nowadays in west christmas is anyways consumerist. They are close allie of the USA though politically also. I dont consider them western anymore but as teenager and school kid I did, because I was not aware what western exactly means, it was just a gut feeling. I never considered Russia as western, but now I learned that Russia is western because they are white and roman. its also interesting that culture is now defined along "racial lines" I was not aware of that, Black Afro Rappers were always very western to me more so then russian or polish skinheads.

The map insinuates that there is no civilization in sub-Saharan Africa. It's bullshit.

Japan in some ways can have a very conservative culture, and have some things that would seem peculiar to, say Chinese, but also most other cultures. In some ways Chinese are closer to Europeans, and China is modern too. Not that there aren't also many different cultural traits.

Really there are many different cultures, I don't see much of a resemblance between Brazil and Russia, as your map claims (sure, they are both large countries with many ethnic groups). Or say, Brazil and Canada.

I also don't see why you would lump together Chinese and Mongolians either.
