I recently had a poster here claimed the following. It was posted by someone who claimed to be a Christian and a democrat.

More than half of Democrats are Christian.
  • Non-Christians give 2.0% of their income straight to charities
  • Christians give 1.9% of their incomes to charities and 0.6% to their Church to preach the Gospel adding to 2.5%.
  • All the giving difference is to preach.. not impacting charitable work.
  • The highest givers are Evangelical Christians and most of their money goes to the Church, not charity
Giving is very nuanced and I dont consider giving money to the Church money to charity. I was head of the Finance committee at my Church as a leader and we were always broke because the Pastor was very generous in giving and helping.. .but 85-90% of the gifts run the Church... only 10-15% make it to charitable services. Small churches only give about 5%.

The difference in charity in your head isnt really the reality. Again, I am Christian.. I just know Christians are not better people. They are regular people with the same failings and strengths.

Is this true?

The poster in question seems to think that the church has no real positive impact upon society that normally would not be there without it, yet he participates in it anyway

Fascinating.

Yep, Christianity has not impacted humanity whatsoever it seems, yet the same person clings to Christianity?

Why?

I would hope both do. It is an obligation for all of us to perform good deeds.

Does the world need the church? Does the church make a difference in the world?

Most today don't see the benefit to practicing their Christian faith, much like the poster I quoted even though he teaches Sunday school.

The real question is, if Christ had not come into the world and influenced the world, would charity even be a theme in secular government?

It certainly was not before Christ came into the world.

Most charities, hospitals, and universities were started by Christians, yet the consensus today is that the church is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, problem within society.

Christianity impacts Christians mainly. The needy generally don't care where they get charity and aren't especially moved to join a church because of it. Many attend churches just for the handouts. When the handouts dry up, they are gone.

Then they move on to government for handouts.

People just love free things, don't they.

Reminds me of Jesus performing the miracle with bread and fish as he fed the multitude. They wanted to make him their king. Why? Cuz they wanted more free handouts.

But Christ rejected this as he departed from them. His disciples must have been very confused as to why he did not take them up on the offer of the people to make him their king.

And any Left-wing free handout government supporter would have been equally as puzzled. I mean, why not just meet the physical needs of the people 24/7 forever?

I would rather live with people of religion than atheist any day of the week,,

well accept for muslims,,

If you give it, they (deadbeats) will come and likely be picky.

I don't give to any "poors" charity anymore. My experience at the local food bank was all the lesson I needed....The "poor" can go **** themselves.

My money goes to pro-2A .orgs.....Mainly SAF and the VCDL.

I was researching an idea that I had about the differences between the north and the south in the antebellum period. It seems that the southern attitude towards physical work, and that of farming in particular, was anathema.

Southerners enjoyed hunting and fishing, raising cattle and horses, gambling, and especially drinking, while enjoying a mostly leisurely life, thanks in no small part to the warm year-round climate.

The need and desire for slaves effectively preserved this way of life while providing needed wealth for the southern states. Curiously, the author noted that even the slaves were infected with this attitude toward work and thus were not worked to death as is commonly believed. They too enjoyed a rather leisurely existence, if not very productive one.
.
The author confided that this attitude remains largely unchanged, which presents a dilemma for many in the south, which is the present-day need for work, including the dreaded agriculture. Could this negative attitude for physical work be responsible for much of the nation's poverty statistics?

My charity goes to those who are seriously afflicted with serious conditions through no fault of their own.

You don't need to go to church to get charity from a Christian org.......

I'd rather use my money help put my grandchildren and G. Grandchildren through private school.

A good well grounded education for a kid is the best gift you can bestow upon a future society.

It's too late for the generationally "poor" to waste my resources on.

Thanks to God's blessing I can afford both.
