When I was in the Army in Washington DC, my SGT Major told me they sent coffins home with a foot, dog tags and 120 lbs of cement.

They seal the coffins with tags that read (eg) remains unviewable do not open.

He said they did it for the families because they did want thier love ones to the troop was atomized and all that left of him was his foot.
