Not just a cool bunch of video images.

But I do see them as pretty cool.

When we contemplate the potential physical prowess of robots and androids, and we add in concerns about the “safety” of AI, it Is not always pleasant to contemplate this science-fiction future we are probably entering.

I get such a bad feeling from this

I enjoy good Science Fiction. Like the works of Asimov about “Robots” which included his acclaimed “3 Laws of Robotics.”
  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Recapitulated at Wiki: Three Laws of Robotics - Wikipedia

They are likely not sufficient, alone, but they are a good beginning of how we might want to address possible threats, now.

Also, we can get a jump in this by swift enactment of safety protocols on AI And that means hearings and legislation.

I think about Gort in "The Day the Earth Stood Still", "I Robot", VJOR in "Star Trek the Movie", Hal 9000 in "2001: A Space Odyssey" vs the harmless and lovable droids in the Star Wars Trilogy or the gentle and amazing Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation and wonder what controls and safeguards might be necessary? And of course there is the ultimate evil achieved with AI and robots in "The Stepford Wives" and "The Matrix."

And if some evil power takes over all the computer systems that control every aspect of our lives, what then?

I have no doubt that the coming generations will be much more comfortable with AI and lifelike robots and a fully computerized world and such. But for now, I guess my more cynical and practical side causes me to see too much opportunity for as much mischief as benefit.

I always remember my dad the first time he saw my electronic typewriter/word processor with daisy wheel and bi-directional printing circa 1988. He was just amazed. I often wish he were alive to watch sports (he was a big sports fan) on a modern 4K 65" HDTV. He would not believe it.

I am honestly thankful that I will not live long enough to see the widespread adoption of androids into our society walking among us looking and acting like people with many times our strength, speed and agility and able to cogitate mental processes 10X faster, able to take a bullet and keep right on coming, working as police and other roles of behavior enforcement.

Can we get him to compete in women's sports? It wouldn't be the first time an android beat a female athlete.

One of the flicks I enjoyed was “Bicentennial Man” starring the late Robin Williams.

Part of me looks forward to living in a world where we do, regularly, interact with “androids.” It will be like living in some decent science fiction book’s view of the “future,” as envisioned in the past.

I liked that movie.

Part of me does too. I'm a big technology guy. But I also realize the potential to misuse the technology and people will want to develop Terminators for military aps. Just remember, all this technology comes on the heels of a mankind essentially unchanged since the Dark Ages who just 100 years ago thought sending morse code by telegraph and Edison's wax tube photograph was the future of mankind.

Now THAT is fucking TERRIFYING.

I'm getting so tired of prequels...it just lazy...
