You can watch Conclave for free on Peacock with a few ads, or you can pay $20 to watch it on Amazon Prime.
I can guarantee you this movie will win some Oscars, including Best Picture.
The plot involves how the Catholic Church elects a new Pope after the old one dies. Although there are about 250 Cardinals in the world, only about a hundred are allowed to vote. There are three ranks of Cardinals. At the top of the heap are Cardinal Bishops, then Cardinal Priests, then Cardinal Deacons.
An interesting fact is Cardinals cannot participate in a conclave if they are older than 80 years of age. Something we might want to think about with our Supreme Court.
During a conclave, the Cardinals are sequestered. They cannot communicate with the outside world, and vice versa.
There are some well-known actors in this movie. Ralph Fiennes plays the dean of the college of Cardinals (Lawrence) in charge of the running of the conclave. Stanley Tucci plays Cardinal Bellini who many others believe should be Pope, but he is against the idea for himself, though he considers it to keep far right Cardinal Tedesco from being elected. John Lithgow plays another favorite, Cardinal Tremblay, but he possibly labors under a scandal known only to the dead Pope. Then there is Lucian Msamati who plays Cardinal Adeyemi who is also in the running. You may know Msamati from Gangs of London, a great TV series on Netflix.
If you don't know anything about the Roman Catholic Church, I'll just say there are left-wing factions, there are moderates, and there are right-wing factions, and we see all of these in Conclave.
The process of electing a new Pope and the jockeying to be Pope are extremely political and this film does a great job of portraying what happens in a conclave.
Ralph Fiennes will probably get an Oscar for his performance. Everyone does a fantastic job, including Isabella Rossellini who plays Sister Agnes. Rossellini looks like she really should be a nun.
There are a lot of little and medium plot twists in this movie and one gigantic twist. One that caused me to go, "OH!...MY!...GOD!", and I don't do that. I don't.
If anyone reading this has seen the movie or read anything about it, please don't even hint at the big twist. Don't ruin it.
But that twist is sure to garner Conclave a Best Picture Academy Award. When you watch the movie, you'll understand exactly why.
The cinematography alone makes this movie worth watching. It's a beautiful piece of art and will probably net another Oscar.
