Smoke and fire came suddenly

"Everybody saw the smoke, because it kind of filled the back of the cabin. And then somebody screamed 'Fire.' Everybody kind of stood up, was trying to figure out what was happening," said passenger Jennifer Rodgers after arriving in Texas.

Passengers were instructed to get out

"At least the fire was already out, but the smell was really bad from the lithium battery or whatever it was. A girl was holding a Samsung phone that sort of started smoking. It burned her hands. And they just told us to get out," said Rodgers.

Crew kept people calm as best they could

A chute was deployed at the back of the plane for people in the back. For those in front the jetway was returned to the plane's front door, but that took time. The Andersons credit the crew with keeping people calm.

Two thoughts.
Good thing they were still on the ground.
Many young people abuse the heck out of their phones.

It reads that a girl had the cell phone in her hands when it caught fire. Her hand was burned. I still do not use a cellphone at all mostly due the cancer risk. Then again I don't want to be tracked, nor for anyone to get in touch with me that often.

Now looks like the cell phone batteries are faulty and catch fire. Just imagine if she had the phone next to her face.

I must have a phone in my car, because I drive on isolated roads during very dangerous winter weather. It's an old flip phone.

I will never own a smart phone.

If I got stuck on an icy road during dangerous winter weather I would hitch hike just bed others for a ride into town. I would not remain in that car.

Those older flip phones may have been better with safer batteries.

Most people where I live take care of their neighbors but yes, your point is a good one. Homes are mostly spaced about a mile apart, so even walking would be doable.
