My Grandfather was one of the first employees of the Carnation Milk Co. in Washington State before it was named Carnation. The company (and the town it was in) were named Carnation after a cow named Carnation who could be milked four times a day.
In the late twenties, Carnation opened another dairy in Glendale, California. My Grandfather and Grandmother moved to Glendale to staff the new location.
In the late 1800's "Carnation Condensed Milk" in a can was introduced. An advertising slogan was created which said it was "The milk from contented cows."
In the 1980's Carnation introduced "Carnation Sweet Evaporated Milk."
At the Glendale plant, it was announced that there would be a contest to come-up with a advertising slogan for the new Sweet Evaporated Milk.
Grandfather never swore, so he nervously looked around as he told us kids what was submitted to the company for a new advertising slogan.
Swearing Alert !
It was, "No tits to pull, no shit to pitch, just pop the top off the son-of-a-bitch."
The slogan was soundly rejected but it became an inside joke at the Glendale plant......HA
