Supposedly the largest coke works in the USA too.

The damage may well impact steel production for some time.


 
It obviously smells suspicious. One can only hope that it was somehow just an accident.

I'm not sure what can explode so violently in a coking operation, unless perhaps, somehow, water got into the furnace.

The explosion was mostly vertical, straight up out through the roof. That suggests to me that water got into the coke process, maybe the coal was wet or water somehow fell into the furnace.

At 1000°, water turns to steam instantly and releases a violent, uncontainable explosion.
