Asbury Park has seen declining enrollment for years due to white flight. The former Bangs Ave Elementary is a hundred years old and not worth keeping open

The Barack H. Obama Elementary School in Asbury Park, N.J. will be shuttered this summer, largely due to low enrollment, the Asbury Park Press reports.

Bruce N. Rodman, the official who oversees the district's finances, determined that it was necessary for one of the district's elementary schools to close and the Obama school's enrollment had dropped 35 percent in the past 10 years, the newspaper reports.

Why the heck are they naming a school after him when he's not dead?

I can see naming a carrier after him, but schools usually wait till the guy passes before they memorialize him.

there was a Richard Nixon Elementary too, in his hometown of Whittier, CA. It looks like they changed the name to Patricia Nixon school.

The John F Kennedy school here in Portland was only open a short time, and was turned into a bar/motel several years ago.

It is very expensive and spendy.

I kind of think it is better to let a decent time pass before you start naming schools after politicians.

It is just now starting to come back with a rebuilt waterfront and downtown area
