This being the season of Lent, I thought I would talk about my favorite related movie, Barabbus.
In the Bible, the Pharisees are out for blood and stir up the Jewish population against Jesus and demand the Romans crucify Him.
Pontius Pilate sees no legitimate reason to do so, and he attempts to give the mob a second chance to let Him go by way of the Passover tradition of a Paschal Pardon, in which one prisoner is freed.
The mob choosesa January 6 insurrectionist a thief named Barabbas to be pardoned instead of the apostate from Bethlehem.
And this is where the movie starts.
Barabbas returns to his home and picks up his pagan, thieving lifestyle where he left off.
He witnesses Jesus' crucifixion, at one point making personal contact with Him, and the contact buggers him for the rest of his peripatetic life.
It's a great story. All fiction, but still a good religious story. One of my favorites, even back when I was a militant atheist who was also troubled. I posted my conversion process in another recent topic on this forum.
My favorite line: "Why can't God make Himself plain!"
Anyway, you can rent this film on Amazon for about three bucks. Money well spent, IMHO.
