Aurora australis lights up sky over southern Australia

Southern parts of Australia were treated to a spectacular light show last night.
That was after the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued an alert for a severe geomagnetic storm.

While it might sound like a bad weather system, it's exactly the notification some photographers want.
The storms are what cause the phenomenon known as the aurora australis (also known as the southern lights), which produce a colourful light show in the sky.
The strength of the storm meant it was visible even in Queensland.
Below are some stunning examples of the aurora captured while many of us were asleep.

Another wonder of nature.

Too bad that is just a made up image. That is big in vogue now in photography, using computers to "spice up" images adding several images together, enhanced detail and color, etc., to make some fantasy view.
Yes, it's often a mind game today deciding what's real and what's fantasy.

With the northern lights it can be a little of both. If you put a cellphone camera on the right settings it can detect photo/film the aurora activity even when it is not visible to the naked eye. It tends to often be super fast though so the images can appear and disappear in the time it takes your phone to do the snap.
