Doing so would reinforce and improve Trumps popularity while also dragging the rest of the world to turn more fiercely against China.

Chinas best play would be to accept that their days of exploiting the West, especially the U.S is over and to become more capitalist. The problem is that their word isn't reliable and the CCP would never ease up on their authoritarian control. Similar to Canadas S.I.C that have sunk us for decades since there has never been accountability for them.

A failure for China to do so will return them to a Mao era with angry citizens who had a taste of some wealth and freedom they never experienced in the past and they can also access global information through means they couldn't before the internet age even with their firewall.

There are already many instances of civil disobedience from citizens putting up posters demanding the end of CCP and a change to a democracy etc. This will only become worse for their government if America hold their grounds and rejects their demands to "treat us with respect (which wasn't earned)"
