You all will know the two.
For me there is a slight difference.

Santa Claus is just a mythical character designed by parents who brings gifts to little kids.

Father Christmas is the general spirit of, for, and behind the holiday at large, of charity, compassion and the spirit of giving of oneself to others. A spiritual thing.

Father Christmas seems a lot closer to St. Nicholas, a genuine historical and/or cultural figure, and Santa Claus is an advertising tool of the Coca Cola company.

Santa Claus was invented in early America to be distinct and different from "Father Christmas", because the US was trying to establish it's own identity, so they drew on the Dutch "Sinter Klaus" (St. Nicholas) drawing on Dutch traditions in NYC. (which was originally called New Amsterdam).

As far as the figure, nearly every country has their own tradition - The Brits have Father Christmas, the Dutch have Sinterklaus, the Russians had Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost), the French have Pere Noel, etc.

They all kind of devolve from Saint Nicholas, whose feast day is on December 5th and is associated with giving gifts.

One of the German traditions I grew up with was we would put our shoes on the stairs on December 5th and St. Nick would leave us something small and cheap.
