Former Ore. governor hopeful takes plea deal | KOIN.com
Craig Berkman, who ran for governor in 1994, pleaded guilty Tuesday to securities fraud.
Investigators said he claimed to own Facebook shares when he didn’t and then told them to more than 100 investors. He is accused of telling investors their funds “would be used to acquire highly coveted, pre-IPO shares of Facebook, LinkedIn, Groupon and Zynga,” court documents state.
Berkman — who lives in Odessa, Florida — is admitted to pocketing $13 million, court documents reveal. Federal prosecutors said Berkman transferred more than $6 million of investor funds to his personal bank account.
Berkman used to head up several Portland-based investment funds and was once the chair of the Oregon Republic Party.
At one time, Oregon had some exemplary Republican Governors. But for the last 20 years, they have ran people who often ended up behind bars, just like this fellow. Hopefully, the Oregon GOP will kick out the wingnuts presently controling the party, and once again offer us people like Governor Tom McCall.
