^^^ I can verify that staying home doesn't help. On the day after Black Friday 2008, a car literally crashed into the front step of my house. Thankfully no one was killed or hurt, and the house is where I still am to this day.
Just months later on Memorial Day weekend 2009, that Friday, someone broke into my house while I was still in it. The car was gone when the break in happened, but what kept me from ever learning who the perp was is the fact that they were never able to actually get inside of my house. Why not? I had wet laundry hanging up in front of the door that they tried to come into the house from. When they saw how easily the coming in was not going to be, I guess that they gave up and so to this day, I'll never know who it was that shattered the door's window space that allowed them to reach in and unlock the door from the other side of it.
