Anomaly in Earth's Magnetic Field

Over South Atlantic this weakening field is splitting:

No doubt this is a fairly normal and regular occurrence with anomalous developments of competing separate N and S localized poles within the core affecting the global magnetosphere, but leave it to satellite developers to neither expect this nor account for it, now scrambling to redirect or at least shut down vulnerable systems when passing through the anomaly.

High energy protons are like sledgehammers on electronics.

I believe we're due for a polarity reversal, this may be a step on that path.

Could be. It might occur by first developing a secondary set of weaker N and S poles within the anomaly which gradually have increased strength transferred to them driving them apart and opposite the main N and S poles until they become the dominant poles and eventually consume the original poles in reversed orientation, as opposed to just one set of poles which somehow just "flop" sides one day.

Not so, says the article:

A study published in July 2020 suggested the phenomenon is not a freak event of recent times, but a recurrent magnetic event that may have affected Earth since as far back as 11 million years ago.
If so, that could signal that the South Atlantic Anomaly is not a trigger or precursor to the entire planet's magnetic field flipping, which is something that actually happens, if not for hundreds of thousands of years at a time.

So what does that really mean? Scientists are proven wrong 80-90% of the time. Every discovery surprises them. Every major discovery is usually an accident. As soon as they say nothing will ever happen, it happens.

That suggest to me that BOTH could be true. The anomaly is a constant and recurring event that sometimes fades to invisibility, then perhaps, every once in a great while, grows large or strong enough to precipitate a pole reversal, either as a causal event or perhaps just symptomatic of the underlying cause.

Iron sunk to the core of the Earth is under tremendous pressure and heat, so naturally has a liquid layer at some point which rotates and moves due to electric currents and varying magnetic actions. It would be amazing to be able to see into it! It is a gigantic dynamo in action.
