Americans are becoming Russians, a people who take pride in their endurance of suffering, even if the suffering is caused by their own stupidity or their blind faith in authoritarian leaders.

I came to this conclusion after watching several episodes of The Americans, an FX series (2013-2018) about Soviet spies posing as an American couple living in a Virginia suburb during the 1980s. The Soviets reflect on the hardships in their own country, sometimes with pride and often in comparison to the “soft” and “spoiled” Americans. It doesn’t occur to them that their problems might be attributable to a Russian “way of life” or form of government.

Americans now accept “thoughts and prayers” as the appropriate response to mass shootings or weather disasters attributed to climate change and say “We’re not pointing fingers” when people demand accountability. They just add the word “Strong” after their community’s name, claiming resilience after scores of people are killed.

I'd go more with "Romans", as Rome fell because of greed and just people in power clinging to their power, no matter the cost.

The appropriate response to mass shootings is to provide better security to various places and to end the practice of "gun free zones." Increasing gun restrictions is about as effective as increasing drug restrictions.

As for "climate change", that's a grift by governments to control resources and tax people more. The real environmental threats are much simpler and have nothing to do with carbon or carbon dioxide.

Also, modern Russians have certain things going for them. For starters, they don't let the LGBT nuts manipulate their society. They keep those people at the fringes, as they should.
