My 20-year-old Dodge diesel with almost half million miles on it has a sound. Too heavy to be a valve, but not hard enough to be a rod knocking. Either way, it's time for a new one. No big deal. It's money I didn't expect to spend, and I'll miss the old grey goose, but I knew it would happen eventually. Dr, daughter wants to buy me a new one for Christmas. That might not be a problem for some, but for me it's a bit of a ding to my ego. That's my little girl. I'm supposed to look out and care for her. She' not supposed to be buying me a truck. She says her accountant told her to either spend the money before the first of the year or pay it in taxes. Logic says take the truck, and I probably will, but my ego isn't so sure. When she was in med school, I used to tease her and say she was my retirement program, but I didn't mean it. Oh well, I guess there are worse things to worry about.

Say thank you and take the truck.

Feel sorry for yourself after you get the truck. 😀

its not being silly .. you want your daughter to invest into her future .. but its says a lot that she would buy you a new truck .. shes a good daughter ..

Make sure you get every damn option you want, don't scrimp.....Given what doctors charge she can fuckin' well afford it.

A 5-10 minute (no shit) visit to my MD and they bill my insurance $345.00.....Anything extra (say a flu shot) is billed on top of that.

I swear, I'm wondering if they are billing for each footstep they take.

Her accountant says do it so take the 'W'. And being a Dad myself I'm guessing you invested WAY more than the cost of a truck in her upbringing and education.

What kind of horrible person takes money from their own child???

Just kidding :D Enjoy your new truck!

That is...as long as it doesn't come with strings attached. You're not going to become her personal moving company are you?

I can just hear it now...HEY MOM...I just bought a new couch...will you go pick it up & deliver it to my house?

HEY MOM... :D

All our usual banter aside, I’ll say this.

Her gift to you would make her feel good about herself.

Can you properly deny her that?

I'm already her personal moving company, only she usually calls me Dad, except on Mother's Day when she gives me a card. I've been mother and daddy to her since she was six.

Never considered that.

Worth a thought, perhaps. In any event, I hope that at least helped.
Logic says take it, and make sure she understands that the fact that she would do that is worth more to me than the truck. It's still not real comfortable for me.

Yeah. That’s fair. But, it is for your daughter. So, that mostly seals the deal.

You might want to take a screen grab of this post. You won't see me agreeing with you and thanking you for your remarks very often.

Yet you don't want another entitlement system like single payer health.

Kudos.

Pay up.

/----/ How does her buying you a truck avoid income taxes?

Accept the truck. It's her way of saying:
"Thanks to you, I can do this"
