Both are fairly evenly matched.
"Alien" introduced some unique concepts. I recall when first seeing it I thought it would be 'just another sci-fi'. The scene where the face-hugger pops out and latches on to one of the crew was a definite shocker. My girlfriend (later ex-wife) wanted to leave then and there. I told her we were staying.

"Aliens" was a classic extension of the first and one of the best sequel treatments of a movie, IMO. Lots more action and also twists on what the first movie seeded.

I'll go with "Aliens", but it barely nudges out "Alien".

BTW, as I often have to do with most sci-fi movies, I suspended my objections to the non-science involved in making the plot/story-line, in order to enjoy the film. Although I've quibbled it since.

I agree with the first answer - Aliens just edges out Alien. The first brought out the awesome concepts and story - the 2nd went straight to it since the storyline was already established by Alien.

You definitely should watch some of American Sci Fi movies (and read more American Sci Fi books). That's the part of mindset that modern Roman-Germanic Europeans lacks. And that's why Roman-Germanic Europe, I believe, doesn't have future at all.
