The Cold Within

Six humans trapped by happenstance
in dark and bitter cold.
Each one possessed a stick of wood,
Or so the story's told.

Their dying fire in need of logs
The first woman held hers back
For on the faces around the fire
She noticed one was black.

The next man looking cross the way
Saw one not of his church
And couldn't bring himself to give
The fire his stick of birch.

The third one sat in tattered clothes,
He gave his coat hitch
Why should his log be put to use
To warm the idle rich?

The rich man just sat back and thought
Of the wealth he had in store
And how t keep what he had earned
From the lazy, shiftless poor

The black man's face bespoke revenge
As the fire passed from sight
For all he saw in his sick of wood
Was a chance to spite the white

The last man of this forlorn group
Did naught except for gain
Giving only to those who gave
Was how he played the game.

The logs held tight in death's still hands
Was proof of human sin,
They didn't die from the cold without
They died from -----THE COLD WITHIN

On a purple sun-shot evening
Under wild flowering chestnut trees
Upon the threshold full of dust
Yesterday, today, the days are all like these

Trees flower forth in beauty,
Lovely too their very wood all gnarled and old
That I am half afraid to peer
into their crowns of green and gold.

The sun has made a veil of gold
So lovely that my body aches
Above, the heavens shriek with blue
Convinced I've smiled by some mistake
The world's abloom and seems to smile
I want to fly but where, how high?
If in barbed wire, things can bloom

Why couldn't I? I will not die!

Beauty Tips

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness

For lovely eyes, look for the good in people,

For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry

For grace and poise, walk with the knowledge that you'll never walk alone

For beautiful hair, let a child run his fingers through it once a day.

Attitude

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of ATTITUDE on life. ATTITUDE to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skills. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is that we have a choice everyday regarding the ATTITUDE we will embrace for that day. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the only string we have, and that is our ATTITUDE.......I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you........

There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, "It is just as I feared!--
Two Owls and a Hen,
Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!"

My dad had a saying he repeated often. IDK if it's from someone else's quote or if there was more to it.

I complained because I had no shoes
until I met a man that had no feet

In the beginning, when God created humans, he noticed their loneliness. So, God decided to create a companion, reflecting His own love. This new creature would offer unconditional love and loyalty, reminding humans of God's love even when unseen.
Thus, God created Dog. And Dog, filled with joy, loved humans unconditionally, always wagging its tail.
However, some time passed, and God observed that humans had become filled with pride. They strutted and preened, believing themselves worthy of adoration. Dog's love, while a wonderful gift, had perhaps been a bit too successful in making them feel adored.
So, God decided to create another companion. This one would be a constant reminder of their limitations and that they weren't always worthy of adoration.
And God created Cat. And Cat WOULD NOT OBEY humans. When humans looked into Cat's eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme being.
Humans learned humility. God was pleased.
Dog kept wagging his tail.
And Cat didn't care one way or the other.

Walk Easy On The Earth

Walk easy on the earth:
Each life has it's own fragile rhythm,
To be aware of it is to understand,
To ignore it is to abandon oneself to sadness.
It is to search vainly for the wholeness that only comes in surrender to what is.

Walk easy on the earth:
Too much seriousness obscures beauty,
Intensity blinds and distorts one's focus,
Excessive ambition destroys true perception,
It is not hard work or suffering that debilitates,
but a loss of contact with oneself.

Walk easy on the earth:
Anger clouds vision and rage shortens life,
Laughter is the greatest gift of the free spirit,
To laugh profoundly and often is to understand,
To laugh at oneself and all of life, and thus to see clearly.

Walk easy on the earth:
Love is waiting to reveal itself when it is time,
Nor can one create it despite the most noble intent,
Love is the discovery of one's own rhythm in another,
Any other love, regardless of time or cimmitment,
will only be doomed and painful.

This above all: WALK EASY ON THE EARTH!

WASHDAY

Got to hurry here and get breakfast done,
Nine mouths to feed; hungry everyone
Build a good hot fire, mix some biscuits to eat,
Go to the dug-out for milk, and fry up some side meat.
Make a pot of coffee for Willard, he's gonna need it
He's plowed the north 40 and today he's gonna seed it
Get the younguns up, don't dawdle, hurry now
We got chores to do, whose turn to milk the cow?
Breakfast over, tea-kettle's steamin hot
I'll get these dishes washed, and the coffee pot.
Thomas and Samuel, get your overalls on for school
Jim, the eldest, stays at home, that's the rule
We ain't got no money to pay a hired hand
But Willard needs help to farm this land
Help dress the little ones, Mary Jane, dress Baby Ann
While I cool down the milk and scald the pan
The clock is chiming seven, time is getting away
I should of got up earlier, not enough hours in the day
Go to the smokehouse for a bar of that yellow soap I made last week
Get some rope for a line, and tie the clothes in a big sheet
Put a pot of beans on the back of the stove
Open the stove lid, lay in a big lump of coal
The beans will be ready for supper tonight
With a pan of cornbread, they'll taste just right
Let's see now--I'll scoop some live coals in this little pail
So Maggie can carry them, that's my five year old girl
I'll need'em to start my fire down by the spring
You need hot water to get the clothes clean
Now I'll get the old wooden wagon out to the shed
I can pull the baby, the clothes and two year old Ned
I'll carry along this big stick to beat on the ground
In case that ol' black grizzly comes around
Finally we arrive at the spring, not let's see--
My tub and washboards here and knife in the fork of the tree
I spread out the pallet for the baby on the ground
And caution the others to stay close around
I shave the soap into the kettle when the water gets hot
And skin a stick to poke the clothes down into the pot
The sun is rising high in the sky I see
As I rinse the clothes in cool water, then tie a line to a tree
I get the white clothes wrung out and hung on the line
And now the baby is fussin it's feeding time
I'll sit here and rest a spell while I nurse the baby
Tell a story to Ned and he'll rest too maybe
The children are hungry and ready to eat
These dried apples in my apron will give them a treat
Well, back to work and finish this wash
Punch down the colored clothes into the pot
The white clothes finished, colored clothes out to dry
Just enough time to pick some berries--I'll make a pie
Well clothes are folded, tub and kettle put away
Stick the knife back in the tree for another day
Put the clothes in the wagon where the baby's bedded down
Make room too for Ned, he's sleeping sound
While the little ones are sleeping, I give the other two a bath
Quickly bathe myself, get dressed and start up the path
Pulling the wagon back towards home
Sun's goin down, is it late? or a storm?
Back at the house, clock says four, not a moment to waste
Heat up the oven, roll out the pie dough, must make haste
My Willard will soon be in from the field
Cornbread to mix and potatoes to peel
See that the children get their chores done
Feed the chickens and animals, every one
Willard and Jim coming up the lane
Grinning from ear to ear, cause it's gonna rain!
Now we all sit down, supper's steamin hot
And my Willard gives thanks for all the blessings we've got

I wanted God to take away my pride
And God said "No"
God said it was not for him to take away,
But for me to give up.

I wanted God to grant me patience,
And God said "No"
God said that patience is aa byproduct of Tribulation,
it isn't granted, it is earned.

I wanted God to give me happiness
And God said "No"
He said He gives blessings, happiness is up to me.

I wanted God to spare me obstacles,
And God said "No"
He said suffering draws you apart from the world,
closer to Me.

I wanted God to help me grow personally,
And God said "No"
He said I must grow on my own,
But He will prune me to make me fruitful.

I asked God to help me love others as much as He loves me.
And God said, "Ah, finally you have the idea."

I dreamed Death came the other night,
and Heaven's gate swung wide.
With kindly grace an Angel came
and ushered me inside.

And there to my astonishment
stood folks I'd known on Earth
Some I'd judged and labeled 'unfit' and 'of little worth'

Words of indignation came to my lips
but never were set free
For every face showed stunned surprise
No one expected me.....

OLD FOLKS

Remember, old folks are worth a fortune,
with the Silver in their hair
Gold in the teeth,
Stones in their kidneys,
Lead in their feet
and Gas in their stomachs

I have become a little older since I saw you last,
and a few changes have come into my life since then

Frankly, I have become quite a frivolous old gal.
I am seeing FIVE gentlemen every day.

As soon as I wake up WILL POWER helps me get out of the bed.
Then I go to see JOHN.
Then CHARLIE HORSE comes along
and when he is here he takes up a lot of my time and attention.
When he leaves ARTHUR RITIS shows up and stays the rest of the day.
He doesn't like to stay in one place too long,
so he takes me from joint to joint.

After such a busy day I'm really tired and glad to go to bed with BEN GAY.
WHAT A LIFE!!!

PS.
The preacher came to call the other day.
He said at my age I should be thinking about the hereafter.
I told him, OH, I DO, all the time. No matter where I am,
in the parlor, upstairs, in the kitchen, or down in the basement

I ask myself now, "WHAT AM I HERE AFTER?"

History of the Plow

A plow is an implement used to prepare the soil for planting.
Early man used a stick to turn the earth.
Later he broke off a forked branch from a tree,
sharpened a prong to turn the soil,
hitched his wife to the other end to pull the plow,
thus inventing the first crude plow.

Later oxen were used to ull the plow of ancient farmers.
It did little more than scratch the surface.
The Early American plow was still a wooden tool and required a full day to plow less than one acre.
Plowing was speeded up when the cast iron plows came into being.
They were made of wood and sheathed with metal surfaces.

A blacksmith, John Deere, is credited with making the first steel plow from old saws in 1837,
Today disc plows can turn over many acres of land in one day.
Plows of this type are drawn by tractor,
The sulky is a riding plow. It is horse-drawn and turns only one furrow

The walking plow is still useful in small plots of ground. It can be drawn by a horse, or mule.
It is called a walking plow because a man walks behind the plow and keeps it in position by grasping the handles
The smallest plow is the push plow that is used commonly in home gardens.
It works by wheel push method and requires no animal power, just man power.

The plow was one of the cave man's first tools and today is still the most necessary implement for bringing forth new life to this old earth.

Farmers

Farmers come in all sizes with the keenest eye,
the largest heart and the strongest back.
The farmer's eyes see the crack of dawn
and the first stars that come out at night.
He sees in his mind's eye
the harvesting before the planting even begins.
He sees rain before a cloud appears.
His eyes are everywhere,
yet they hold the largest smile that covers many acres
yet remain where they began.
A farmer's heart shows kindness to all creatures,
understanding, compassion, tolerance
and has the patience of a saint.
A farmer's back carries many burdens.

He feeds America
He is a farmer!
