18 audience members of the Stuttgart State Opera felt ill and had to call an ambulance after a performance of the opera “Sancta” (“The Saint”). It only appeared in the repertoire on October 5, but has already caused an uproar because of explicit scenes.

“We had eight people on Saturday and 10 on Sunday who had to be looked after by our visitor service,” a spokesman for the opera said. In at least three cases, he said, audience members had to be given medical attention because of nausea.
Outrages were sparked by scenes in which performance participants use a lot of artificial blood, do on-stage piercings, undress, swallow crosses and drink real alcohol. The opera had previously been staged in Vienna and was heavily criticized by local religious activists.

The performance is based on Paul Hindemith's “Sancta Susanna” (“Saint Susanna”), released in 1921. The original tells the story of sexual madness taking place in a convent. In those years, this opera was also accompanied by outrage and scandals - because of them the premiere was postponed for more than a year.

The new version is directed by Florentina Holzinger, 38, (lesbian) known for productions with dancing, nude actors and provocation. Previous shows have included sword swallowing, excrement, tattoo bashing, masturbation and etc.

And I've been told opera is boring.....
