A century ago, Germany’s democracy was hijacked by a bombastic and charismatic tyrant — and in this five-minute video, you’ll learn how he did it. Why did I produce this? Because I believe that history is speaking to us, and all too often, those who refuse to learn from it are doomed to repeat it.

As you watch, imagine filling out a Bingo card filled with Germany 1933/USA 2024 parallels: big rallies, rage-filled and hateful rhetoric, simple answers promising quick and easy solutions to complicated problems, empty promises of a great-again future, scapegoating outsiders, and political enemies silenced on day one. And notice the caring wisdom and concern from my German friends as they share these lessons from their dark history.

It’s hard to understand how Trump could, on the eve of a tight election, paint a picture of Liz Cheney before a firing squad by actually saying, “Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? And let’s see how she feels about it when the guns are trained on her face.” You can’t get into the mind of a dictator with an insatiable appetite for power — but you can recognize the playbook they all seem to follow.

Just watch this clip. It’s excerpted from my hourlong public television special “The Story of Fascism in Europe,” which is streaming free (and ad-free) at http://ricksteves.com/fascism. If you care about our democracy and love our country, it’s hard to stop watching.

When I produced this in 2018, I hoped this day would never come in our country. But November 5th is upon us. Please share this with anyone in your life who might need a reminder that the stakes are high...and this is very real.

Some interesting food for thought ahead of our election on November 5. What do you think?

It's apparent you don't know your history. Then againwhy woud you?
You omitted the fact that after the Novenber 11, 1918 Armistice ending World War One.
The Communist Party (KPD) in Germany was only second to the USSR in size in 1921, when Hitler created and formed the Nazi Party.
Lenin made a deal with the Kaiser to end the war on the Eastern Front.
How Lenin’s ‘sealed train’ smuggled clarity into revolutionary Russia

Mr. Hitler was veteran who loved the idea of war. President Trump is a self made billionaire who loves the ideas of Peace and Prosperity.

Hitler was a huge advocate of socialized medicine and gun control, he called his movement "national Socialism". OTOH Trump believes in free markets.

The real nazis in the race were the Democrats who push for war against Russia and socialized medicine and gun control.

I'm just glad that's not happening here. That would be bad.

Yeah. Brilliant. Trump is 78, and he's setting the table to be the Fuhrer for the next 20 years. Do you people ever listen to yourselves?

Keep spreading the false and faked fears
It served you well in you ability to lose every major segment that was voted upon

No, they do not. In the case of this one, it's just a kneejerk reposting of something believed to be cogent and witty. Sadly, there is no filter that prevents repetitive postings of the same thing over and over again.

All I know is that since Biden won in 2020, Democrats have taken away first and second amendment rights, tried to do a government takeover of the media, weaponized law enforcement against their enemies, including jailing many, and forced people to get vaccinations against their will and carry papers in order to go out in public.

YAWWWWWN...... Trump and Hitler are two completely different people. Hitler Didn't have the slightest notion about capitalism. Germany was a socialist state from way before the 1900s..... It was a perfect breeding ground for a dictator just like all socialist governments are.

Call it what you will, the Trumpsters clearly want a conservative authoritarian strongman at the helm, and they will support him regardless of how far he goes. This would include placing blatant, unqualified sychophants in key positions, isolating the country from the rest of the world, requiring absolute loyalty from all areas of government (never has this happened in our country's history), and leveraging powerful oligarchs wherever possible.

"History doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme". They can deny this all they want. This is their chance to grab unlimited power, and they'll do whatever it takes.

Ironically, these are the same people who have been whining that the Dems want "one party rule". They themselves have that now, plus a President who is immune and a compliant Supreme Court.

Call this whatever you want. But this will be a right wing autocracy/theocracy, and they're all for it. While they call themselves "patriots". Maybe they'll be more honest about this once he's sworn in.

Clearly my ass.... You're exactly wrong.

What most people want - not just conservatives - is not to have a "strong man" at the helm. I don't know where in the hell you've been for the past 50 years but Democratic administrations are the ones that are authoritarian.

No tolerance, no compromise, no alternatives...... Mandate, mandate, mandate...... Add to that the extremely careless social indulgence of a constant stream of condescending insults designed to dishearten any individuality and you have: "what the hell took the people so long to wake up?"

Don't bother. democrats work off narratives, not truth, and they're desperately spinning the "TRUMP! is Hitler!!!" narrative right now. It doesn't matter how often it's pointed out to them that they are as correct as the builders of the Hindenburg deciding to use hydrogen, they want a narrative that they can regurgitate without thought.

Oh yeah didn't you hear? The Hindenburg never happened.... It was all just special effects on the camera even though they didn't have any special effects then. 😁

Yup, they dubbed in "Oh, the humanity" later to ramp up the horror factor.
