I worked with a guy who was really short. He starved himself to stay too light to keep from being drafted as he said they weren't putting his ass in them tunnels. Another's dad was Swiss so he fled to Switzerland to keep from going. Our boss took like 6 years to get an associates degree to exempt himself. Every time he got close to graduating with a bachelors and the war was still going he would switch majors to something totally unrelated so he would have to start back from scratch in his core classes.

I knew 2 brothers that avoided the draft by not meeting the weight requirements. One practically lived on speed and diet pills and was under weight. The other brother ate so much food everyday that he was way over weight. Both brothers were classified 4F.

Well I guess it was good for mom's budget to not have them both go the fat route LOL.

I was in basic training in early 1970
There was 50 of us in my platoon.
Everyone was drafted except one guy.
He joined the Army because his brother was killed in Vietnam.
He wanted to go there and avenge his brother's death.

i hope he calmed down a bit in boot camp.

vengance may be a good reason to join a war, but better a colder blooded dedication to the cause.

could hiroshima be justified as "vengance" for pearl harbor? probably, but the more compelling reason was "to minimize mortality, in both sides, of continuing the war. "
