I'm not sure why any potential assassin would just automatically assume he'd be at Mar A Lago in the first place? As president, he could be anywhere in the country or even overseas.
I'm not blaming them for their own deaths because everything I've heard says ICE completely disregarded its own protocol in its confrontations with the two individuals, but yes, if they'd stayed the hell away from them, they'd be alive now.
He was apolitical. Voters who claim he'd support one party or candidate are just looking to justify their own support, quite often in an attempt to manipulate others into doing likewise.
He does have the option of donating the amount of his salary increase to the federal department of finance. If he seriously doesn't want it and believes it's inappropriate to receive, that is the way he should go.
