Lü Honglai, born on November 15, 1953, was an early democracy activist in the People's Republic of China.

In 1979, he participated in the Xidan Democracy Wall Movement and served as editor-in-chief of the pro-democracy publications Bohai Bay and Pen Tan. Due to his long-standing political activities, he was detained, arrested, and imprisoned by the Chinese government four times, and subsequently dismissed from public office. In 2008, he went into exile abroad and was resettled in the United States through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 2012.
