I would guess that you took a circa 1980's self-esteem class. You know, that ones that suggested that attendees should create a persona of ridiculously pumped up ego as a mask for insecurity. It followed the assertion that 'as you think so shall you become'.
Not working.
1. This has become a hot-button issue.
2. More people oppose the NRA on this issue than support them.
