Was America too slow to free the slaves or is the record pretty good given the plant's history?

I disagree as a general statement, though it's true is was NOT a simple issue. The greatest case for preserving the right to own slaves was wrapped up in John Calhoun's Nullification argument, but to appeal to it to say the Civil War wasn't about slavery is akin to saying Pelosi's opposition...

Was America too slow to free the slaves or is the record pretty good given the plant's history?

I disagree with a few phrases of your post, particularly the "better off" notion, but mostly I strongly agree. Perhaps the worst thing about the American experience with enslavement was the association of status with color. For most of human history such was not the case. Slavery was an equal...

This is what honest reporting commentary looks like

I watched his opening statement, and I think the part about families is dead on. Outstanding commentary. Even though I think he's right, that politicians needs unresolved problems to keep their anxious base faithful,* I don't think the disintegration of families can be solved simply by being...

Was America too slow to free the slaves or is the record pretty good given the plant's history?

That's honest, and it's true of all of us, most likely. I don't think there are enough genuine white supremacists now to shake a stick at, hence the ongoing push to expand "white supremacists" to include all white people (conservatives, at least), President Trump particularly, or "white...

Amazing new op-ed by Romney in the Washington Post

It looks like Mitt has decided to run for the GOP 2020 nomination for president through the pages of the Washington Post. Good luck with that!

Was America too slow to free the slaves or is the record pretty good given the plant's history?

And were the slaves too stupid to live free? If slavery had its myths to pretend it was justifiable (or unavoidable), we've spun our own myths to pretend we are superior to those lazy and cheap slave owners. I take a different view entirely. The economic engine of human society for millenniums...

Cleveland Clinic Doctor: I’ll Give Jews the Wrong Medicine

Sheesh, this thread went to the dump in a hot minute. Meanwhile, Monica Showalter comments on this at American Thinker. She finishes writing, "this person threatened to poison medical patients because they are Jewish. What she did was poison medicine." Truly said. Look in this thread how easy...

Maine Governor Wacky Paul LePage Writes ‘Stolen Election’ on Note Certifying Democrat’s Election Win

From your link: "However, the ruling was narrow. Justices didn’t address larger legal questions about the voting system that they voiced last year and during a hastily scheduled hearing last week, including conflicts with provisions in the Maine Constitution that call for statewide elections...

Maine Governor Wacky Paul LePage Writes ‘Stolen Election’ on Note Certifying Democrat’s Election Win

According to a different report, "Maine’s top state court last year warned that ranked-choice voting conflicts with the state’s constitution, which says the winners of state-level races are whoever gets the most votes, or a plurality." Meanwhile, the calendar demands certification, so just do...

    Was stumped by a Creationist

It's still the "theory" of evolution, or whatever, and it's still modified as evidence supports or contradicts empirical evidence. Not as many things become "laws," like the Law of Gravity. So far as I know, the Big Bang is still the Big Bang Theory.

    Was stumped by a Creationist

Is this a fancy way of demanding critics prove a negative? You can dress it up with multi-syllabic words and dependent clauses, but you can't prove a negative. Thus our justice system is based on the presumption of innocence: the commission of a crime must be proved. At least that was the case...

    They Have Arrested Eight

What jumped out at me as I started scrolling through your CNN link was how many of the slain officers were people of color. Despite the publicity given some victims like Kate Steinle, I wager most victims of crimes by illegals are also people of color. Also, the CNN report doesn't identify the...

    Trump should comply

I'm seeing this reported as if these are the complaints of western parliamentarians, but it turns out these complaining Iraqis are mostly (if not all) Muqtada Al-Sadr and his Sadrist Party. Al-Sadr was a murderous enemy of ours in the Iraq war, responsible for killing hundreds of ours.

If 100% secure border is so needed , what about the north border ?

Well, the buses would have to be locked. I'd pipe in "Wheels on the Bus" and other favorites.

If 100% secure border is so needed , what about the north border ?

Sounds reasonable to me. We can do like Mexico and shuttle the caravans all the way north, let them storm into Canada. Trudeau will be happy. We could go the extra mile (or 1300 miles) and provide bus transportation, at least in the winter.
