Well, after all the grandstanding with the Constitution reading and all, maybe we should just take a moment to reflect on just what the new House speaker and his buddies are all about:

In late June of 1995 then-GOP Conference Chairman John Boehner handed out "about a half-dozen" checks from the political action committee of tobacco company Brown & Williamson Corp. to fellow Republicans on the floor of the House.

Boehner's chief of staff Barry Jackson stated, "We were trying to help guys who needed to get their June 30th numbers up, their cash-on-hand numbers up. All leadership does this. We have to raise money for people and help them raise money."

Boehner was forced to stop handed out the checks when two freshmen Republicans, "appalled by it," confronted him and voiced their displeasure. Boehner's reaction was one of tempered apology, "I thought, 'Yeah, I can imagine why somebody would be upset. It sure doesn't look good.' It's not an excuse, but the floor is the only place you get to see your colleagues. It was a matter of convenience. You make a mistake, admit it and go on. I just feel bad about it." (Associated Press, 5/10/96)

We have the best government that money can buy.
And I am not picking on any one party with this statement.

So maybe with your permission we can stop subsidizing Tobacco Farmers too???

The difference between us is You don't like whan Republicans do it and I don't like when Anyone does it. Subsidizing is not value for value. It is something for nothing at the greater society's expense.

you get what 50% of us pay for, the other 50% don't pay shit.

The tobacco check scandal is not even the tip of the iceberg.

What we need Government to be is the Impartial Referee, there to maintain the quality of play and maintain the playing field. It's role is not to influence the outcome of the game, or pick winners and losers. The game itself does that. This Referee has sleeper players in the game, and big money bet all over the place so much it has lost track. This Referee needs an intervention. Time for Rehab. ;)

More like a citizens revolt, I swear this country needs to wake up get mad and really come together to do something to be heard. But I'm sure there's a law on the books or in the wings that would outlaw this statement or way of thinking.

And did I say that subsidizing tobacco was a good thing?

Nope, but YOU seem quite comfortable with LYING about what I post. Next time, stop trying to play Kreskin and just ASK what I think about a subject.

Typical neocon dodge.....avoid acknowledging the obvious bad practice by their leadership and try to justify it by blaming "them" (whoever "they" are) with some lame and tired neocon accusation.

Us citizen said it all. Our government is bought and paid for and unlike the country borrowing money congress demand cash for their payment. I am surprised the they take checks. I am new to this format and am always amused when I find a contributor who really lacks the communication skills to articulately express themselves.

It's not an accusation it's a fact.

You've my permission to stop subsidizing all farmers, eliminating ethanol, grants to universities, etc.

What, that's Boehner and company are in the pockets of corporations? Hell, that's old hat....I just wanted to remind folk like you of it.

Oh, and if you want to try an change the subject, at least get your talking points in line with the rest of the neocon squawk fest...because that percentage point of yours keeps fluctuating like a cheap ham radio signal.

Acknowledge my point first, Willow....THEN we can move onto other subjects.

You mean a stop to corporate welfare as well?

a large part of ag subsidies are corporate welfare.

Amazing how large a percentage of the AG subsidy payments are mailed to NYC addresses.
