Sometimes it appears that U.S. foreign policy is the result of a debate between adults dealing in reality and petulant children who don't want to eat their spinach. The latest case on point is Afghanistan, the "good war" even by our Nobel Peace Prize winner's standards. Against all common sense and military advice, we announced a timetable for the complete withdrawal of our troops from that country, thereby emboldening our enemies to fill the vacuum we were creating.

As that eventuality becomes ever more apparent, we have now put that policy on hold, essentially leaving it up to the next administration to make the hard decisions about what to do. Unfortunately, this is a microcosm of this administration's policies in general: Disclaim any responsibility for dealing with reality, always choose expediency over long-term solutions and let someone else clean up the ensuing mess.

Isn't this equivalent to an abdication of adult responsibility? Should we really be turning over the reins of our government to emotionally immature individuals? Have we become a nation of self-absorbed children?

More like a nation of self-indulgent cowards.
