There's free and there's free. After having been "free" there are certainly better conditions to be in. What happened to her was certainly unfortunate. In reality it is no less unfortunate than young women today suffer. Imagine that Celia lived today, but as a young white woman in NYC. While walking home from work she is attacked by a homeless drug addict. She is beaten bloody, viciously raped. She manages to reach a small pocket knife and turns the tables on her attacker. She kills him.

Vigilante justice. She murdered an innocent, sick, black man. She is arrested and tried for murder one. Life sentence. Perhaps death penalty. She's another Daniel Perry.

Poor families have sold their children into slavery for hundreds of years. It was called apprenticeship. The goal was to teach the children a skill to have a better life.
