White House: Israeli settlement plan 'counterproductive'

don't give up hope. Someday you may yet learn to form thoughts of your own and to use words to express them.

sometimes its speaks more when it comes straight from the evil racists horses mouth

Clearly you still have a lot of work to do, but we can count that as a start.

google yourself, this is like the most basic thing imaginable, its well established all settlements are illegal, go and find out some stuff if you want to discuss an issue since you clearly dont know anything about it

I come from the world, and have a degree in international relations. you are very very stupid, these laws do exist, and they trump every other set of laws in the world.

We both know you are just repeating rumors you have never investigated. If you believe such laws exist, with your extensive background in international relations, you should have no trouble producing them, but you won't be able to do that because they don't exist.

The international community considers the establishment of Israeli settlements in the Israeli-occupied territories illegal under international law,[1][2][3][4][5] but Israel maintains that they are consistent with international law[6] because it does not agree that the Fourth Geneva Convention applies to the territories occupied in the 1967 Six-Day War, due to lack of a legal sovereign of these territories.[7] The United Nations Security Council, the United Nations General Assembly, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Court of Justice and the High Contracting Parties to the Convention have all affirmed that the Fourth Geneva Convention does apply.[8][9]
Numerous UN resolutions have stated that the building and existence of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights are a violation of international law, including UN Security Council resolutions in 1979 and 1980.[10][11][12] UN Security Council Resolution 446 refers to the Fourth Geneva Convention as the applicable international legal instrument, and calls upon Israel to desist from transferring its own population into the territories or changing their demographic makeup. The reconvened Conference of the High Contracting Parties to the Geneva Conventions has declared the settlements illegal[13] as has the primary judicial organ of the UN, the International Court of Justice[14] and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The position of successive Israeli governments is that all authorized settlements are entirely legal and consistent with international law,[15] despite Israel's armistice agreements having all being with High Contracting Parties.[16] In practice, Israel does not accept that the Fourth Geneva Convention applies de jure, but has stated that on humanitarian issues it will govern itself de facto by its provisions, without specifying which these are.[17][18] The majority of legal scholars hold the settlements to violate international law, while others have offered dissenting views supporting the Israeli position.[2]

The Wiki article you posted from states clearly that there are differences of opinion on whether the Fourth Geneva Conventions apply. The fact remains that the Fourth Geneva Conventions is a treaty that only applies to relations between the signatories to the treaty, and short of formally amending the treaty and submitting it to the high contracting parties for approval, no mechanism for changing that meaning exists. When a resolution calling the Israeli West Bank communities illegal was put to a vote in the UNSC, it failed to pass, so while many may think the Fourth Geneva Conventions should apply to the disputed territories, no legal basis for claiming they do exists, and while many think these communities should be illegal, no legal basis for claiming they are exists. When your argument that the Israeli West Bank communities are illegal rests of the claim that more people think they are than think they are not, you are in effect saying this is a political issue, not a legal one.

actually the difference of opinion is israel doesnt agree every other country in the world does, not much of a difference then is it.

and sadly you are both wrong and ignorant once again, have a read of this

United Nations Security Council Resolution 446 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

United Nations Security Council resolution 446, adopted on 22 March 1979, concerned the issue of Israeli settlements in the "Arab territories occupied by Israel since 1967, including Jerusalem".[1] This refers to the Palestinian territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip as well as the Syrian Golan Heights.

In the Resolution, the Security Council determined: "that the policy and practices of Israel in establishing settlements in the Palestinian and other Arab territories occupied since 1967 have no legal validity and constitute a serious obstruction to achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East"

so I think youll find it did pass, and it also isnt the only one there are multiple un resolutions covering this, israel is in violation of more un resolutions than any nation ever

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House said on Friday a new Israeli settlement expansion plan was "counterproductive" and could make it harder to bring Israel and the Palestinians back to the negotiating table.

"We reiterate our longstanding opposition to settlements and East Jerusalem construction and announcements," White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said.

Israel plans to build thousands of new homes for its settlers in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, an Israeli official said earlier, defying a U.N. vote that implicitly recognized Palestinian statehood there.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's conservative government had authorized the construction of 3,000 housing units.

"We believe these actions are counterproductive and make it harder to resume direct negotiations or achieve of a two state solution," Vietor said. "Direct negotiations remain our goal and we encourage all parties to take steps to make that easier to achieve."

Of course he did, he buys into the terrorist theater. Maybe he would know better if he actually listened to his to his intelligence briefings instead of thinking he already knows everything.

Why is it that you cannot express an opinion without attaching an insult? Being rude doesn't make you right.

The United States today vetoed a Security Council resolution condemning all Israeli settlements established in occupied Palestinian territory since 1967 as illegal, saying that while it agreed that the settlements are illegitimate the resolution harmed chances for peace talks.

United Nations News Centre - United States vetoes Security Council resolution on Israeli settlements

The US has repeatedly refused to call the Israeli West Bank communities illegal while at the same time opposing continued building in them because the US understands this is a political issue not a legal one. When you claim more parties think the settlements are illegal than those that think they are legal, you are saying the same thing.

446 states that Israel can't claim a legal basis for its activities in the West Bank but does not claim there is any basis for calling them illegal. Similarly, it calls on Israel to abide by the Fourth Geneva Conventions but stops short of claiming they are legally binding in the disputed territories.

Where you come from there may be rumors that such laws exist, but in fact they don't. Look for them and you'll realize you've been suckered.

If they did they'd be enforced - they might fall into that quagmire of international not really law soft law bucket that no one ever risks their career over emptying ;-)
