While there is a lot of focus on the recent takeover of Palmyra in Syria by the Islamic State due to its UNESCO World Heritage Site status, less attention has been paid to the residents of those areas. Loveday Morris of the Washington Post joins Hari Sreenivasan from Baghdad, Iraq, via Skype.

When they saw the opposition in Syria start up because of Assad not sitting down and negotiating with them, the generals saw a chance to begin. After all, didn't they say that Syria was the stepping stone to the new Caliphate? I can't see these psychotics in ISIS leading an army, but I can see these generals leading the psychotics in warfare, knowing full well that these psychotics are barbaric plus don't seem to fear anything because they want to become martyrs..
