...of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. I do not know what most people think when reading these words, but what they should remember is that this is our grant of power to the government. The Constitution is not about the government giving us rights, protecting us, or making the decisions for us. It is us, as a people, coming together and acknowledging that we are in charge, but we need to give power to the government to make things work. It is our declaration of independence from a government that holds all the power. It is the triumph of the individual over the power of government. It is the beacon of freedom for the entire world. It is American exceptionalism because it is the first time in the history of the world that the people came together to limit a government's power from the onset rather than demand that the government acknowledge the rights of people after it became a tyranny. We the people own the government, it works for us, and we should demand that it leave us alone.
