I came across this BBC production a couple days ago while browsing Primewire. I assume it is a mini series since the the first episode covers Book I. The sets are great and the acting is decent/good. I do have a few concerns. Pierre (Paul Dano) was miscast in my opinion. Mr. Dano does a great job portraying Count Bezukhov's social awkwardness and inexperience. Physically, he just doesn't look the part. The size and red hair appear to be lacking. There is a scene that strongly suggests a sexual relationship between Helene and Anatole Kuragin. I don't recall that part after having just read it (maybe I overlooked it or haven't gotten there yet). Lastly, I find the ladies dresses to be too plain in some cases. The men's clothing is appropriate but the female attire doesn't quite exemplify the elegance or opulence of the period. I guess I am nitpicking. Overall it is off to good start and staying true for the most part to Tolstoy's masterpiece. I haven't finished the book yet and am afraid the second episode will spoil it for me. Need to make sure I am well enough ahead that I can watch the next episode.
