As far as I'm concerned, the wall is to stop the current invasion of illegal aliens. I don't really give a shit about the drugs, that's a political talking point. We'd have far less trouble with certain now illegal drugs if we legalized them for adult use and regulate their content and strength.

You actually have no idea how many drugs cross our southern border via simply walking across the border. All we know on that score is the amount that we actually interdict.

If we have , let's say, 250 miles of border being monitored by 50 federal agents, those agents obviously have a better chance of catching drugs being brought in via submarine or tunnel, or by airplane , or by whatever if they don't also have to guard against people simply carrying drugs across an open border because there is a "wall" there.

This is NOT fact, but opinion. Here's what YOU don't seem to comprehend: fewer agents guarding the open spaces means more agents can be looking for drugs at the points of entry.

I think a better and stronger wall will mean fewer drug dealers, gang members, criminals, and terrorists bypassing the legal points of entry and getting into our country. As for the barrier being high-cost, tell us why it wasn't too high back in 2006 when so many Dems voted for such a wall then, hmm? $5 bil or so out of today's budget is a small amount to squabble over, certainly a ridiculously small amount to shut own the gov't over.
