Vatican warns parents that Halloween is 'anti-Christian' -

The Vatican is warning parents not to let their kids dress up as ghosts and goblins this weekend for Halloween, calling it a pagan celebration of "terror, fear and death," Britain's Daily Telegraph reports in a dispatch from Rome.

The newspaper's Rome correspondent, Nick Squires, notes that the Roman Catholic Church has become alarmed in recent years as the traditional U.S. celebration spreads to other countries, particularly Britain and Italy.

The Vatican issued its warning through its official newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, in an article headlined "Halloween's Dangerous Messages."

It quotes a liturgical expert, Joan Maria Canals as saying, "Halloween has an undercurrent of occultism and is absolutely anti-Christian."

And people wonder why I have a strong faith in god yet refuse to follow any specific religion. That position is just silly IMO

The scariest house in our neighborhood...they deck it out with these fake stained glass windows and dress up as priests and try to talk all the kids that stop by into becoming altar boys.

The Vatican is not telling parents to not let your children go trick-o-treating but rather to those Catholic's a reminder that dressing up as undead type costumes are not in line with the Catholic teaching.

It is the duty of the Church to guide the followers of the faith. If you don't like it then don't listen for the message wasn't meant for you anyway.

'Halloween has an undercurrent of occultism and is absolutely anti-Christian'

Um...that means trick or treating is a no no.

Halloween is a pagan custom. That doesnt make it anti-Christian.

Haiioween is a Pagan celebration.

No Christian, Muslim, or religious Jew should participate in this occultic holiday.

Excuse me, I have some blood to go drink...

Seriously, this is why people don't take the Vatican and Pope seriously. Well that and the fact that he looks like the Emperor from Star Wars.

I'm Catholic, pretty observant. I will say the idea of dressing up for Halloween is more an American tradition, than any religious overtones. I know some Evangelicals have taken such tones regarding 'paganism', but I'm not on board if the Vatican is saying such.

BTW, I got pissed when the 'church' got panties twisted over Harry Potter, seems more of the same.

Ask Sunni on his opinion of Harry Potter. It's a riot.

Halloween is the High Holy day of Satanism.

No follower of one the three major monotheistic religions should celebrate this devils holiday.

Actually, if you knew anything (which you don't), Halloween comes out of the Celtic Festival of Samhain. It's a festival held at the end of the harvest season. In the Northern Hemisphere it starts October 31 and ends either November 1st or November 11th.

Interesting.........the Bent Dick/Rat Singer of the Catholic church pokes his beady little head up yet again to play whack a pope.........

First, let's talk about dressing up as the dead. Now, isn't there somewhere in the Bible (I think somewhere in the book of Revelations, as well as other places), where it talks about the dead being resurrected? Now, if your kids are dressing up as the dead, aren't they in a small way celebrating the resurrection?

Then, let's talk about 31 October (which incidentally is 13 backwards). Yeshua (Jesus) had 12 disciples, plus when you add Him, it makes 13. In the Bible, it also talks about the shepherds tending their sheep. Now, if it was in the middle of winter, don't you think that the sheep would be in the barn? Oh yeah......it's also been shown via archaeological records as well as historical records, that the actual time of birth of Yeshua was closer to 31 October than 25 December. When Rome sacked Jerusalem, they stole their religion. In order for them to sell it to the pagans of Rome at the time, they adjusted the date of His birth to coincide with the Winter Solstice (which is supposedly a time of renewal), rather than the actual date.

Incidentally, they did the same thing with Easter, which is timed (by the Catholics) to coincide with the Spring solstice, which represents fertility and re-birth.

Oh yeah...........as far as the origins of trick or treating? In the middle ages, on All Hallow's Eve (Halloween) they would bake what they called "soul cakes" for the dead. Now, some of the poor knew that the dead wouldn't be there to eat them, so they would go up to a house, knock and ask for a soul cake, and in return for the cake, they would offer to pray for the dead relatives of the house.

It was kind of an interesting way of sharing with the poor.

Sting made a song about it incidentally...........

Yes it's an old pagan festival commercialised beyond recognition and in a way that commercialisation has obscured its origins. It's entirely probable that many people don't realise its origins.

When Christianity came to England with the missionaries it was competing with pagan beliefs and ritual. As biker pointed out it absorbed many elements of pagan belief in the countries or regions it was seeking to establish itself. Nothing like sublimation to bring the locals through your door and keep them there.

In a sense the Pope is merely doing what his predecessors have done for hundred of years - beating up on the competition

It's interesting that it has been such a big deal in America. In most other places it goes by without much fuss, but I have to admit I will be out shopping later today to get some treats - I don't care about the tricks but I don't like to see kids disappointed.
TODAY is Halloween. For some Australians, it means getting the kids dressed up and hitting the neighbourhood up for some freebies. For others, it's a good time to pretend you're not home.

Australians don't really know what to do with Halloween. While countries such as the US and Britain embrace this event by dressing up, carving out pumpkins and lighting bonfires, it somehow doesn't seem right starting fires in our bushfire season.

But it's not like Thanksgiving. Aussies can't just say, "Ah, it's a Yank thing."

So, we're stuck with it.

Youd think they would have done this before now. I mean hasnt this holiday been around for centuries?

They do it every year. It doesn't usually make the MSM but the Catholic press carry it. This year is no different, it is just a reminder to Catholics and nothing more. Why anyone who is not Catholic would feel it is their business is beyond me. Frankly, I don't comment on what leaders of other religions tell their congregation but some people seem to have the need to comment on everything and anything - whether they understand it or not. Others, of course, see it as an opportunity to denegrate the beliefs of others. Those people are just ignorant.
